Fair analysis, David.

But we haven’t “ditched” the DST. Enforcement was put (back) on hold, and Carney stated he’d bring forward legislation to kill it in the parliamentary session that begins tomorrow.

I’d bet that he won’t do so until & unless a suitable trade agreement is reached.

Two can play at breaking promises, but Carney is no TACO.

As for us Canadians losing patience, unfortunately that’s just life with Trump.

Let’s be thankful that we’re not in the position of the people of Ukraine, whose interminable (and probably fruitless) waiting for Trump to actually do anything about Putin is killing them daily.

He oversold his "elbows up" to win the election to appeal to a reactionary hockey nation that was already too much of a 51st state to begin with. No doubt Mark and Dominic LeBlanc are technically competent and logical but they are dealing with a mad king. I still say thank goodness the reactionary Poilievre and his team of sloganeers are not in power as I watch Carney and see him taking us in a more Conservative direction- socialism for the rich and austerity for the rest. I wish we had a strong third party. I wish we were less reactionary and our thinking was less based on marketing slogans like elbows up to win elections.

Well, I for one, is not leaving dealing with an idiot south of the border to an idiot north of the border who is, as you called it “sloganeer”. Spent too much time in negotiations over 40 years to rely on that nonsense with folk who were serious never mind someone who is not aware of his surroundings and has too much sway over his “advisors”.

One word, naive. I don't know why Carney, and by extension, us, thought we could unlock the secret Trump code. The reality is there is no code. Just a sad unpredictable old man. A powerful one, but none the less unpredictable.

And my limited optimism turns to absolute dread when considering our likely next P.M. will be Poillievre. He's brilliant at turning faux outrage into votes, but actually doing something? Not a chance.

It's a sad fact of life. Trump is too powerful. He'll get what he wants. Concede, don't concede, negotiate, don't negotiate. It doesn't matter. I'm not sure why this isn't crystal clear to the world. If it is, they don't act like it is.

Why would we make a tariff deal that’s worse than what we have? Why would we make a deal when the American courts say the deals felon wannabe king has been making are against their own laws? He’s doing the right thing and biding time and in the meantime securing other deals with reliable countries and business leaders - like the $15 billion LNG project off the coast of Newfoundland.

It took JT 17 months to come up with tariff deals deals. Why make a deal for the sake of making a bad deal and not in the best deal for Canada. Working with Trump and him breaking agreements is not in the best interest for Canada. Trump is untrustworthy. Would you buy a car with 3 wheels but paid for 4 wheels

Maybe the Carney government didn't realize how deranged Trump is when compared to the previous government

As someone who worked with NAFTA, and other Trade Deals, I understand the complexities of Trade Agreements. There is no easy solution when dealing with someone who has proven to be completely unreliable. I shudder to think how much worse our Country would be if Pierre was our Leader. We are expanding our partnerships with other Countries who see what bounty we have to offer and “elbows up” is alive and well with Canadians.

If Poilievre does become the next PM, we will definitely be annexed by the US.

Come on David. You know very well that Trump and his cronies are not normal people or normal negotiators. Would any of us do any better? Would Poilievre do any better? I don’t think so.

Given Trump and his asylum-staffed administration, Carney appears to be playing a Trump-inspired version of "Diplomacy is the art of saying 'nice doggie' until you can find a rock".

Making public any in-depth strategy beyond key members of his cabinet and PMO would be "ineffective" (polite term).

Your observations are not wrong, but I support Carney in his actions and lack of transparency given the situation.

I’m not sure what you think Canadians are looking for but bending over and kissing the orange faced Pretend “king” in the US when CUSMA is still to be negotiated in 2026 seems rather like grovelling to what some perceive as a “greater” power like the Opposition Leader that went to his party faithful to get elected because he burned out the riding he was supposed to represent for 20 plus years. Explain further why folk are “impatient” and why they desire to be annexed. Be clear, concise and succinct, unlike the opposition leader.

You mean relying on the “beautiful agreement” Trump blessed in his first incarnation? That giveaway? Geez louise…🙄🙄🙄

We need to accept that Trump is not going to "do a deal" that he, himself will honour. Any and all arguments that rely on Trump doing a deal (or indeed doing anything) are deeply flawed. Trump is not, and cannot, bargain in good faith. He cannot be trusted.

Carney is the smart move. He is the guy who has to contend with Trump, coming to terms with the core reckoning that Trump cannot be trusted to keep any deal, that every agreement is transactional and revocable at whim. This is what America is, has voted for, twice. Won't change short of revolution. Need to pluck the scales from our eyes and look elsewhere for allies.

Oh for a Canadian politician who would genuinely work for the needs of his constituents. Like all of his predecessors over the last 40 years Carney talked big until he actually got into power and understood how deep our crises had become. Now, of course, he's back peddling and there will be very little change in the housing, health care, education, climate change crises.
