The solution is easy and simple. Legislation that requires manufactures to include technology and or mechanical devices that make auto theft next to impossible. Stops auto theft and keeps people out of jail.

That is just one step in the issue. It will help deter and lower rates of theft for new cars probably, but old cars probably won’t be included leaving most people still in the lurch for a long time. Also, the reasons for turning to crime will still be there. Maybe it won’t be auto theft, but they will turn to something else to make money from that will ultimately still be a problem for society.

Two things: 1) It's likely that any car less than 10 years old can be technologically adjusted to prevent most thefts. 2) You are right that desperate people will find something else to steal or, worse yet, starting selling drugs to kids. That's an easy fix as well: guaranteed annual income. Instead of letting a few people amass 90% of the wealth arising from our common resources and the labour and intellect of working people, that wealth should be shared equitably so people can work less and have a decent standard of living. There would still be a few crooks around who would steal just because they could, but most of those would come from the current class of wealthy people so we'd know where to find them and who to watch out for.

They probably could be, but knowing how most things go, unless the government forces it to be paid for by manufacturers, then customers will have to foot the bill which could prevent people from getting it.

Agree about the guaranteed income. Sure some other issues would arise as it is rare any one thing is a magic bullet, but it seems like it might be close for a lot of our issues in society.

Car thefts have been at a record low. This is a non-important issue that has gained traction due to a right wing conservative government spreading fear about a cohort of people that they want voting for them.

This article was written in 2002, based on stats from 1977 - 2002. I wonder how things have changed in the past 22 years, as I don’t want policy makers planning on trends that haven’t been updated this century.
