I almost reflexively unsubscribed (no offence, my inbox is out of control and I was in a "something must be done about this torrent of incoming mails" reflex), but started reading and couldn't stop. You name a lot of important things. Still with you. Keep at it. Stay healthy.
It takes a lot to make that decision, and I’m sure you saw it all coming the moment you did. The honesty in this post is refreshing and that is an invaluable asset for you, especially in the current environment. This will pay off in the long run.
I keep thinking, have thought for a long time, I could bring something different and productive to the space. A lot of days, I'm not so sure. The structure of the thing is so wretched.
Good for you David. I found you on Twitter, and subscribed to you on Substack, as I value your insight and perspective--even though we occupy opposing ends of the political spectrum (part of the reason I subscribed). I'll never be a political writer, but I've learned from your work, so thanks for that. Being a political writing consumer can be a tough slog too, and some days I wonder why we all consume it. Honestly, prior to your trip I was a tad concerned about you as reading your tweets....hmmm, they felt a little tightly wound. Best wishes for continued success and happiness David, you deserve it. You write, I (and many others) will read. Cheers!
Well congrats I think! As an artist who works in a medium not currently having a “market moment” (and I’m not convinced it even will again in my lifetime) I just gotta say you should really really try to just write books if that is what you want to do. (And your offerings here as well of course). Yes it’s brutal, but really what isn’t. Better to try to live as you want as much as possible imo.
So relieved you aren’t leaving. Looking forward to hearing more and finding ways to support you more. You were key in getting me through Covid isolation. Will miss your hilarious tweets.
I'm a writer almost by second nature at this point, and spend time writing and reading everyday. I'd love to make it a career. It is undeniably difficult to do, and I've never been sure how to approach it.
Always a good read David. The trick will be to be more interesting than AI without having to resort to being an angry, obnoxious, cynical ass all the time like so many opinionators...that will be the challenge of a lifetime.

As a compulsive reflexive unsubscriber, I feel this. But so glad you stayed! Thank you for reading.

What you do is to political news is as an exercise physiologist is to a sports announcer. You're a scholar, not a pundit.

We have 640x200 NTSC parliaments in a 4KUHD world....
What does my nostalgia for 8-bit games say about this?

wishing you the best!
Your too young to be self actualizing, very well said and I’m sure many of us can relate! Loved that column!
We do need more paid small venue speakers. I wish that were your calling too. Just read what you wrote to a paying audience.

I still don't know how it happened -- persistence and luck and asking for held when you need it goes a long way.
Whatever and where ever you write we will enjoy it. Good for you finding time to think deeply about what brings you some joy
Thank you!
