The former Ontario NDP leader and human rights champion might have been one of a kind, but that shouldn't stop any of us from striving to be more like him.
Stephen Lewis testified before the House foreign affairs committee in 2003 as UN special envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa. MPs wanted his expertise even after his Ontario NDP days. Brian Mulroney picked him as ambassador too. I checked the transcript at ourcommons.ca/DocumentViewer/en/1037555. That cross-party respect on human rights feels rare these days. His kind of moral push is exactly what Ottawa needs more of right now.
Camp, Kierans and Lewis Political Panel on Morningside is the all time best, primarily because you had 3 people unshackled from the Party establishments. They had insights into how the political sausage making process occurred.
In my 65 years on the planet it is safe to say the Steven Lewis was one of the one of the most passionate- compassionate inclusive Canadian speakers I ever heard along with his father who hammered into our consciousnesses "Corporate Welfare Bums" as a more accurate way of seeing the true generosity of our welfare state.
Alas Avi might surpass Steven at least in his inclusive thinking as he unlike his father has taken a strong public stance against Zionism.
