In his latest book, former Clerk of the Privy Council Alex Himelfarb talks Canadian sovereignty, inequality, the Yankee menace, the climate crisis, and more.
This is a helpful and interesting interview, but my eyebrows are stuck in my hairline from your mistake in the first paragraph. Donald Trump was not re-elected in 2020, excerpt in his own mind. You might want to correct that to 2024...
I am concerned that Carney remains a true believer in neo liberalism. He has started revving up the privatization express (or it's shadow expression, "public private partnership") and it is clear that "nation building" so far is 1984-speak for more subsidies and fewer regulations for oil and mining companies. I don't see reason to believe more of the poison that gave us the disease is going to cure us.
Pundits like to label like left/right conservative/liberal and measure each action by government that way. It is not black and white but there is a difference between those that only measure $ and those that measure outcome like housing, equity and environment. Coyne last week stated it well, if we have to eg build a pipe line, I'd rather a Liberal do it because it will still encompass those values that are important to me. That is the latitude Carney has been given.
This is informative and helpful and encouraging. Thanks for it. Can we start calling it something other than “the welfare state”? Even social-safety-net seems more, er, saleable.

Threw me off too! 😳

Well said.

Break from neoliberalism
